Forecasters have said things are set to be relatively grim over the coming days, with showery conditions and winds picking up speed thanks to the tropical storm headed in our direction.
The worst of Storm Alex is due to remain out in the Atlantic, giving conditions a chance to settle towards the weekend - however it is due to be windy as a result.
As the weekend unfolds, the weather is due to ease and spells of sunshine will begin to break through before a ‘settled’ change next week.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather took to Twitter to issue an update and said: “Latest wind gust charts for the remains of Storm Alex which will track near Ireland but thankfully the worst will stay out to sea. Still some windy weather Friday and Saturday though.”
Today is due to be a windy day with showers and long spells of rain expected. They will be heaviest along Ulster and Connacht coasts with ‘isolated thunderstorms possible.’
Afternoon temperatures will range from 15 to 18 degrees with a moderate to fresh and gusty westerly wind that will be strong at times along coasts.
Thursday will feature plenty of rain and drizzle as it spreads northwards across the country. However, it is due to turn mostly dry with sunny spells by evening time and highest temperatures of 16 degrees are expected in the northwest and 21 degrees in the south.
Things begin to take a turn for the better at the weekend with a breezy day on Friday and sunny spells beginning to break through. However widespread showers are also expected - some will be light but there will be a few heavy downpours close to coasts.
Another bright and breezy day is expected on Saturday with ‘long sunny spells and isolated showers.’ Meanwhile, highest temperatures will remain the same, ranging from 16 to 19 degrees in a fresh southwesterly breeze. It’ll be mainly dry overnight with clear spells and lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees.
Things continue to change for the better on Sunday with a largely dry day expected featuring sunny spells and isolated showers - mainly in the northwest of the country. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees in moderate westerly winds.
Heading into next week then, the Irish forecaster says: “The current indications are for mainly dry and settled weather for the start of next week with temperatures around normal for the time of year.”
