Ireland weather: Grim twist on the way as Met Éireann forecast big change from record breaking heat

The time of 33C and the majority of the country being left sweating seems too long ago, as the latest Met Éireann forecast brings us right back down to earth.

Last Monday saw Ireland's second-highest temperature of all time recorded as clear skies and no wind saw ten separate weather stations top 30C.

It'll all be very different just a few days later though, with a weekend of heavy rain showers and wind to cause a few problems for people.

The latest forecast, published on Friday morning, reads: "Friday will be largely dry with sunny spells though some isolated showers will occur.

"During the afternoon and evening, cloud will build from the southwest, mainly over Munster and Connacht bringing some patchy drizzle. Highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees."

While Friday won't be too bad, things take a turn for the worse once the sun goes down, as the forecast continues: "Tonight, outbreaks of rain in the southwest will extend across all but northeastern parts by morning. The rain will be heavy at times, particularly in the southwest, west and northwest."

And it's unlikely to improve as the weekend goes on, as Saturday is set to be a washout with some strong gusts thrown in for good measure.

The forecast continues: "A wet start for tomorrow with some mist and hill fog. Widespread outbreaks of rain with heavy bursts in places, while further falls of rain will follow in through the afternoon, turning heavy in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees. Southerly winds will be mostly moderate to fresh but strong at times on exposed coasts."

And if you were planning a big family barbecue on Sunday, maybe stick the grill away, as Met Éireann say: "Sunday will be a breezy day with sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers will be heavy or thundery at times, especially in the west and north. Southwesterly winds will be fresh and gusty, increasing strong at times. Highest temperatures will range from 17 or 18 degrees."
