Ireland international Clare Shine bows out with a win after announcing retirement

Ireland international Clare Shine has announced her retirement from football at the age of 27.

Shine played in her final match yesterday - a 2-0 win for Glasgow City over Hearts.

It was her 106th appearance for City - a two-spell run that saw her notch 70 goals.

Her highlights were a 90th minute winner in the Scottish Women’s Cup final against Hibernian in 2019 and a hat-trick in the decider four years earlier.

Shine this year released a book - Scoring Goals in the Dark - chronicling her battles with addiction and panic attacks.

She also revealed that she attempted suicide.

Shine’s link with the Scottish club will continue through her work as project coordinator for the Glasgow City Foundation.

The Cork-born striker said: “Thank you to everyone who has played a part in my football journey, thank you for all the amazing memories.

“I am looking forward to opening a new chapter of my life, and for Glasgow City, I will always be your number one supporter.”

City head coach Eileen Gleeson paid tribute to the Irish ace

“The end of an era. As Clare Shine announces her retirement from football it is with a mixture of sadness and admiration that I pay tribute to a very special person and player.

“Clare has been an outstanding footballer throughout her career, a brilliant ambassador for both club and country.”
