Ireland's next bank holiday is just days away, with a lot of people looking forward to an extra day off work or school in February.
Last year was unique for having a 'double' public holiday in March. The once-off, extra day off after St Patrick’s Day was introduced as a tribute to health workers and to remember those who died with Covid.
However, it isn't part of the 2023 public holiday calendar. Instead a new permanent bank holiday will be given to celebrate St Brigid's Day, and will be held annually on the first Monday in February.

St Brigid's Day, February 1, falls on a Wednesday this year, meaning the bank holiday will be given on Monday, February 6.
The introduction of the official holiday for St Brigid’s Day has been largely welcomed by the Irish public. It's the first bank holiday to commemorate an Irish female patron saint.
There are 10 bank holidays in total this year. The vast majority of employees are entitled to paid leave for them under the Organisation of Working Time Act, while schools will also close.
One bank holiday has already passed. Because New Year's Day was on a Sunday, the public holiday was given on January 2.
