Iranian officials have refuted recent reports suggesting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country. A member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committees, Yaqoub Rezazadeh, dismissed the claims, stating that Assad and his family have not left Syria.
According to a reliable source, Assad's whereabouts in Damascus are currently unknown. The source revealed that Assad is not present at his usual locations in the city, and his Presidential Guard is not deployed at his typical residence. Despite these reports, the Syrian president's office maintains that Assad remains in the capital.
An adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Larijani, met with Assad in Damascus to express Iran's support for the Syrian government amidst the ongoing rebel uprising. This meeting was reported by Iranian state-owned Press TV.
Furthermore, Iranian officials have denied claims that their embassy staff are evacuating Damascus. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei clarified that the embassy in Damascus is operational and conducting its regular activities. Rezazadeh reiterated this stance, confirming that Iranian advisors and embassy staff are still present in Damascus.
Rezazadeh also mentioned that Iranian foreign ministry officials are traveling to Iraq and Qatar, emphasizing that there is no evacuation of personnel from the Iranian embassy in Damascus.
