Iran war today: What happened in Middle East overnight as Israeli troops deployed to Lebanon

  • Israeli troops have been deployed to southern Lebanon to boost defences against the Iranian proxy group Hezbollah in a major escalation of the war in the Middle East.
  • The Israeli military also says it is conducting "simultaneous targeted strikes against military targets in Tehran and Beirut"; plumes of smoke were seen rising into the air in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
  • Speaking after a pair of drones struck the US embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the “hardest hits are yet to come from the US military”.
  • Australia has said its air base in the United Arab Emirates was targeted by Iranian drones over the weekend, but all personnel are safe and accounted for.
  • Emirates flights have resumed from Dubai this morning, with five Airbus A380 aircraft dispatched; one is heading for Manchester and another to London Heathrow, with the other three going to Jeddah, Paris and Frankfurt.
