Iran-US war latest: Tehran launches ‘most intense’ barrage of missiles since start of conflict

Iran has launched what its state media called the "most intense and heaviest" barrage since the start of the conflict, AFP reported.

Israel said it had tracked missiles being fired from Iran, while Saudi Arabia said it intercepted and destroyed two drones heading towards an oil field. Air raid sirens were also sounded in Bahrain, which hosts the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

Earlier, US president Donald Trump threatened Iran with a military response “at a level never seen before” after the US said it destroyed more than a dozen Iranian mines laid in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command said it had eliminated 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels in the key shipping route, through which around one-fifth of the world’s crude oil passes.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the consequences for Iran will be “at a level never seen before” if no action is taken to remove any remaining mines.

A container ship was been hit near the coast of the United Arab Emirates by an unidentified projectile, the British maritime security agency said, as Iran launched its 'heaviest' barrage of missiles today in response to US-Israeli strikes.

“The master of a container vessel has reported that the vessel has sustained damage from a suspected but unknown projectile,” the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says, adding the extent of the damage is unknown but all crew members are safe.

Oil prices fall more as IEA to release record oil reserve

04:00 , Stuti Mishra

Oil prices fell further today after a report said the International Energy Agency could release more oil reserves than ever before in its history.

Brent fell 0.26 per cent to $87.57 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate dropped 0.44 per cent to $83.08, extending the fall seen yesterday after Donald Trump's indication that war could be ending soon.

The drop comes after both posted their steepest single-day decline in four years on Monday, settling more than 11 per cent lower overnight.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the proposed release would exceed the 182 million barrels IEA members put on the market in two tranches in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. The G7 has separately asked the IEA to model emergency reserve scenarios.

Oil prices have risen nearly 50 per cent since January, driven by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly one-fifth of global oil flows.

The US-Iran war is now in its second week with oil tankers passing the strait still under threat from Iranian attacks. President Trump yesterday warned Iran to remove any mines from the strait, posting: "We want them removed, IMMEDIATELY!"

Iran has launched what its state media called the "most intense and heaviest" barrage since the start of the conflict, AFP reported. Israel said it identified missiles launched from Iran, though later told citizens it was safe to leave shelters.

Saudi Arabia also said it intercepted and destroyed two drones heading towards an oil field, while air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, which hosts the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

Israel launches fresh strikes at Lebanon

Israel has launched a new wave of strikes at Beirut in Lebanon with explosions seen in a suburban area overnight.

The Israeli military said it was targeting infrastructure that belongs to Iran-backed Hezbollah in the south of the Lebanese capital.

A video on social media shows fire and smoke rising from an apartment complex.

Yesterday, strikes hit Lebanon’s southern city of Tyre while an air raid was launched on the southern Lebanese town of Qabrikha. Israeli jets also attacked the towns of Deir Siryan and Taybeh, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Senator says US made a 'horrible' but unintentional mistake after Iranian girls' school strike

03:15 , Rachel Dobkin

US Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, has said the military made a “horrible” but unintentional mistake after an Iranian all-girls' school was bombed.

“I think that it was a terrible, terrible mistake. The investigation may prove me wrong, I hope so. The kids are still dead. But I think was a horrible, horrible mistake.

“I wish it hadn’t happened. I’m sorry it happened. I can assure you it wasn’t intentional. That’s the sort of thing Russia does. We don’t do that,” Kennedy told CNN’s Kasie Hunt Tuesday.

An all-girls school in Minab, Iran, was hit late last month, reportedly killing some 165 people. US military investigators reportedly believe American forces were likely responsible for the attack, but US President Donald Trump has claimed Iran was behind it.

Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East has no idea how or when war with Iran will end: ‘I don’t know’

02:45 , Graig Graziosi

Despite US President Donald Trump's insistence that his war in Iran will soon be complete, the commander-in-chief's special envoy to the Middle East says he doesn't know how or when the conflict will end.

Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were in negotiations with Iranian officials concerning its nuclear program when the president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a joint attack on Iran.

At least 1,230 people in Iran have been killed in the conflict, according to the Associated Press. At least seven U.S. service members have also died.

During an episode of CNBC's Squawk on the Street, Witkoff was questioned by host Sara Eisen Tuesday about how the war will end.

US military spent $9M on crab legs and lobster in run up before launching attack on Iran: report

01:10 , Graig Graziosi

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon apparently isn't feeling the same affordability struggles as many average Americans, as he approved spending more than $93 billion in September, including on luxury food items and iPads.

A new analysis published by government watchdog Open the Books found that in September — the end of the 2025 fiscal year — Hegseth reportedly burned through cash, including spending $9 million on crab and lobster dinners.

According to Military.com, an increase in military officials eating pricey meals has traditionally been viewed as a sign that something may be brewing — such as President Donald Trump’s war in Iran — though it appears Hegseth has been dining well at the Pentagon since at least last spring.

The spending review found that in the month of September alone, the Defense Department spent $6.9 million in total on lobster tail and $2 million on Alaskan king crab, according to the government watchdog. In 2025, the department also spent more than $7.4 million on lobster tail across the months of March, May, June and October.

Leavitt fires back at reporter asking if Trump ‘made up’ Iran strike justification

00:29 , Alex Croft

Karoline Leavitt fired back at a White House correspondent who asked whether Donald Trump was "making up" claims that Iran was about to attack US targets to justify his decision to launch strikes.

The president claimed on Monday that Iran would have attacked the US "within a week" had he not ordered strikes.

“Within a week, they were going to attack us, 100 percent. They were ready,” Mr Trump said.

CBS News' Nancy Cordes asked the White House Press Secretary on Tuesday (10 March): "There are no U.S. Leaders or Israeli leaders who are making those same claims. So is he making this up to justify his decision to go to war?" which prompted Ms Leavitt to respond: “The President is not making anything up, Nancy."

Russian consulate in Isfahan damaged earlier this week, says Moscow

Tuesday 10 March 2026 23:45 , Alex Croft

Russia's consulate in the Iranian city of Isfahan was damaged in shelling earlier this week, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday.

An attack on a diplomatic representation was a "blatant violation" of international conventions and all sides should observe the "inviolability of diplomatic sites", she said.

"On March 8, in the Iranian city of Isfahan, as a result of an attack on the governor's administration of the province of the same name located nearby, the Russian consulate was damaged," Zakharova said in a statement on the ministry's website.

"Windows were shattered in the office building and residential apartments, and several employees were thrown by the blast wave. Fortunately, there were no casualties or serious injuries."

President Vladimir Putin discussed the conflict with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, the Kremlin said. The Kremlin leader has called for a halt to all hostilities.

Israeli PM refuses to say when war could end

Tuesday 10 March 2026 22:58 , Alex Croft

Isaac Herzog, the Israeli president, has refused to offer a timetable on when the war with Iran could end, telling Germany's Bild newspaper: "We need to take a deep breath and get to the end result."

Herzog said the US and Israeli attacks on Iran were changing the whole configuration of the Middle East.

He defended strikes on Iranian oil sites as a way of taking away money from Tehran's "war machine".

The interview was published as the US and Israel pounded Iran with what the Pentagon and Iranians on the ground said were the most intense airstrikes of the war, despite global markets betting that President Donald Trump will seek to end the conflict soon.

Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, had earlier said his country was not planning for an endless war and was consulting with Washington about when to stop it.

“The Iranians are the ones spreading chaos and terror throughout the region and the world. So I think if we measure everything by a speedometer, we won’t get anywhere. We need to take a deep breath and get to the end result,” Herzog told Bild.

Eliminating the Iranian threat would "enable the entire system in the region to suddenly breathe again and develop further. That’s fantastic,” he added.

Comment | Make no mistake, the only person this war is good for is Benjamin Netanyahu

Tuesday 10 March 2026 22:35 , Alex Croft

The Iran war has produced a dizzying mixture of contradictory statements from Washington. But one remark refuses to fade: Marco Rubio’s blunt admission that the United States joined the onslaught on 28 February because it knew Israel was about to strike Iran.

If the secretary of state spoke plainly for a moment, he revealed something uncomfortable – not only about how the war began, but about who may ultimately decide when it ends.

Of course, Rubio then tried to walk it back. How could he do otherwise when US president Donald Trump himself swiftly suggested that the dynamic had been one of the US leading Israel into war rather than the other way round? But why should Rubio have said it in the first place if it was false, especially when a carefully sourced story in the New York Times suggested that Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had “spurred” Trump to opt for war rather than continue with diplomatic negotiations?

Second charter flight carrying UK nationals takes off from Dubai

Tuesday 10 March 2026 21:58 , Alex Croft

A second charter flight carrying British nationals home has taken off from Dubai, the Foreign Office has said.

The plane was chartered to allow those who could not get seats on commercial flights, and particularly vulnerable people, to access a safe route back to the UK more quickly.

There was a charge for the flight.

Increasing numbers of commercial flights leaving the Gulf have become available in recent days, with 32 landing in the UK on Monday.

Some 45,000 UK nationals are estimated to have left the region since March 1, out of the more than 200,000 thought to be in the Gulf at the start of the war.

Trump says US sunk 10 mine-laying ships after threatening Iran over reports of mines in the Strait of Hormuz

Tuesday 10 March 2026 21:48 , Alex Croft

President Donald Trump has said the United States sunk 10 mine-laying ships after threatening Iran over reports of mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

“I am pleased to report that within the last few hours, we have hit, and completely destroyed, 10 inactive mine laying boats and/or ships, with more to follow!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday afternoon.

Trump’s announcement came minutes after the president warned against Iran placing mines in the waterway that carries about a fifth of the world’s oil supply.

“If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before,” Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier Tuesday.

Two intelligence sources told the broadcaster that mining was not extensive yet, with a few dozen laid in recent days.

Iran war threatens Easter travel as BA cancels Middle East flights

Tuesday 10 March 2026 20:10 , Alex Croft

The war raging in the Middle East threatened to throw Easter travel into chaos on Tuesday as British Airways announced it had cancelled all flights in the region.

BA said it would scrap flights to and from the region due to the conflict between Iran, the US and Israel, on routes that typically serve thousands of travellers every day.

In an announcement, the airline said all flights to Amman in Jordan, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai and Tel Aviv have been cancelled until later this month. Flights to and from Abu Dhabi have been scrapped until later this year.

BA will also pause its repatriation flights from Muscat to London after Thursday because of “reduced demand” it said, with limited seats left on the final flights out of Oman on Wednesday and Thursday.

Iranian oil tanker sails through Strait of Hormuz, trackers show

Tuesday 10 March 2026 19:25 , Alex Croft

A supertanker with two million barrels of Iranian oil onboard sailed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past day, data from ship trackers showed on Tuesday.

It adds to at least five other vessels shipping oil to Asia since 28 February.

Analysis from Lloyd’s List Intelligence and Kpler showed the Guyana-flagged Cuma, which is on a US sanctions list, sailed through the strait on 9 March with a destination listed as China.

Iran has also sent gas and oil product cargoes through the critical waterway in recent days since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran began on 28 February.

At least 11 million barrels of crude, apart from the latest shipment, have left Iran since then, according to estimates.

Trump administration asks Israel not to attack Iran's energy infrastructure

Tuesday 10 March 2026 18:56 , Alex Croft

The Trump administration has asked Israel not to carry out strikes on Iran’s energy facilities, according to a report in Axios.

The US requests are the first time the White House has imposed restrictions on Israel since the countries launched a joint war on Iran 10 days ago.

The request was passed on at a senior political level and to Eyal Zamir, the Israeli military’s chief of staff.

Washington said there were three reasons for the request, according to the report.

One was that the strikes were harming the Iranian public, who are largely opposed to the regime.

The second was that the US president wants to cooperate with Iran’s oil industry following the war.

The third reason is that the attacks could prompt huge Iranian retaliatory attacks on energy infrastructure across the region.

US energy secretary deletes post about US escorting oil tanker through Strait of Hormuz

Tuesday 10 March 2026 18:49 , Alex Croft

US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has deleted a post on X in which had said the US Navy successfully escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz "to ensure oil remains flowing to global markets."

It was unclear why Mr Wright deleted the post.

Commenting on Mr Wright's remarks, a spokesperson for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards denied an oil ship had been escorted by US army through the Strait of Hormuz.

"Any movement of the US fleet and its allies will be stopped by our missiles and drones", Alimohammad Naini said in comments carried by Iranian state media.

"The claim that an oil tanker escorted by the US terrorist army passed through the Strait of Hormuz is a complete lie," Mr Naini said, according to state media.

Open Strait of Hormuz or we will strike 20 times harder, White House warns Iran

Tuesday 10 March 2026 18:31 , Alex Croft

Leavitt has now addressed the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important choke points.

“If they do anything to stop the flow of oil or goods within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the world’s most powerful military 20 times harder than they have been hit thus far,” she says.

Leavitt adds that the goals of the war in Iran remain the same: “Destroy the terrorist regime’s ballistic missiles; raze the Iranian missile industry to the ground; ensure their terrorist proxies can no longer destabilise the region; and ensure that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.”

The President is confident these will be achieved in “swift fashion”, she said.

Russia resumes grain exports to Iran via Caspian Sea, sources say

Tuesday 10 March 2026 18:00 , James Reynolds

Russian companies have resumed grain exports to Iran, its third-largest grain buyer, through the Caspian Sea after a pause caused by the US-Israeli war on Iran, four sources with knowledge of the situation told Reuters.

The route has been emerging as the safest for trade with Iran following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Russian grain exports destined for Iran from both the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea were halted last week.

One source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, estimated that the pause in the latter lasted about two days. All three sources indicated that deliveries from Black Sea terminals to the Gulf remain suspended.

LSEG data show five ships being loaded with grain at the port of Astrakhan, totalling around 22,600 metric tons. Additionally, nine ships carrying 28,000 tons of grain are waiting to unload off the coast of Iran.
