Donald Trump says he does not believe Israel will go back to war with Iran, after the US president warned Benjamin Netanyahu he might find himself fighting alone if he restarted attacks.
Trump spoke to reporters on Monday night after Iran and Israel had committed conditionally to halting attacks after the two sides exchanged fire for the first time since the April truce, threatening to plunge the Middle East back into full-scale war.
When asked whether the US would back Israel if Netanyahu reopened the conflict with Iran, Trump told Sky News: “I don't think it'll happen. It's all working out very well. Iran is doing what they have to do.”
He said of Netanyahu: “If I tell him to do something, he does it.”
Axios had earlier reported Trump as having warned the Israeli prime minister that he might find himself fighting alone if he went back to war with Iran. "I said, 'Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon,'" Trump said.
Israel attacked Iran after Tehran fired missiles towards Israel late on Sunday, which it said were in response to Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

Oil prices slightly up after Israel and Iran halt strikes
04:15 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar
Oil prices inched up in early trade after Iran and Israel left the door open to a possible resumption of attacks on each other, though they had called a halt to hostilities following an appeal from president Donald Trump.
Brent crude futures rose 13 cents, or 0.14 per cent, to $94.38 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate was up 11 cents, or 0.12 per cent, at $91.41 a barrel.
Prices climbed as much as 5 per cent in the previous session after renewed Israeli strikes on Iran and attacks in Lebanon reduced hopes of an imminent end to the wider war, but pared gains after Iran's armed forces announced the end of military operations against Israel.

In an interview with Axios published yesterday, Trump said he warned Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu that if the Israeli leader went back to war with Iran, he might find himself fighting alone.
"I said, 'Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon,'" Trump said.
Lebanese president appeals to Israeli government to pursue talks, not war
03:00 , James Reynolds
Lebanese president Joseph Aoun made a rare direct appeal to Israel to come to the negotiating table to end the war, warning that a military solution "will never provide you with security and safety."
"We are ready, we are willing, we are committed. Are you? If you are, let's sit and talk," said Aoun in a CNN interview aired Monday.
The Lebanese government is in direct talks with Israel, mediated by Washington, to reach a full cessation of hostilities, despite opposition by armed group Hezbollah, which is fighting Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.
Aoun said he would not meet Netanyahu before reaching an agreement to end the war. He said any deal would be a non-aggression pact and not a full peace deal.
"We need to end the state of hostility between Lebanon and Israel. Forever. And this (pact) could be a path forward for a just and lasting peace," Aoun said.
Aoun said Lebanon would move in line with the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which offers normalization with Israel across the Arab world in exchange for Palestinian statehood and Israel's withdrawal from occupied territories.
"But we cannot jump from A to B directly. We have to go through different steps," Aoun said.

Iran and Israel have called off strikes following a desperate plea by Donald Trump, as a escalation of violence between the countries threatened peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
More than three months after the US and Israel launched war on Iran on 28 February, and two months into a ceasefire, the latest tit-for-tat escalation prompted fears that a full-blown conflict could resume.
Trump, who has been wrangling with Tehran for weeks over a long-term ceasefire, lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and agreeing a new nuclear deal, urged both sides to hold their fire or risk a collapse in talks.

Analysis | Trump has failed to stop Netanyahu once again – showing who really ‘calls the shots’
Monday 8 June 2026 17:45 , Alex Croft
The Independent’s world affairs editor Sam Kiley writes:
Donald Trump said he was going to jump straight on a call to “Bibi” to tell him not to respond to Iran’s strikes on Israel. Within hours, Benjamin Netanyahu had defied the US president – and targeted several sites across Iran.
This apparent act of defiance came after the US president had insisted that it was he, and not Netanyahu, who “called the shots”.
Like the “brothers in arms” the Israeli leader and the US president like to think they are, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu appear to bicker like siblings.
This is an appearance. Not reality. The relationship between the two leaders has been closer to that of an agent and his handler. It has always been “Bibi” who’s done the handling, and it is always The Don who has been handled. This has delivered unimagined benefits to Netanyahu, who, with the help of Trump acting against the advice of his own band of court loyalists, has reduced the US to a protector of Israel.
Trump has yet to respond to Netanyahu seemingly doing whatever he pleases, but it has not been a good few weeks for the pair.
UN nuclear watchdog chief tells Iran to 're-engage'
Monday 8 June 2026 17:16 , Alex Croft
UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi called on Iran on Monday to "re-engage" with him so inspections can resume at sites the US and Israel bombed a year ago, as the US led a push for a resolution to that effect at the agency's board.
Iran still has not informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of what happened to those bombed nuclear sites or the nuclear material, including uranium enriched to near bomb grade, that was stored there.
While the bombings destroyed or badly damaged uranium-enrichment facilities, much of the highly enriched uranium, including some enriched to up to 60 per cent, a short step from the roughly 90 per cent of weapons grade, is thought to have survived.
"It's very important that we re-engage," Grossi told the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors on the first day of a quarterly meeting.
"I call on Iran to engage the Agency constructively in order to facilitate the full and effective implementation of safeguards in Iran," he added in a separate, written statement to the board, using a term that encompasses inspections.

Iran’s World Cup players wear #168 lapel pins as they arrive in Mexico

The gold-colored pins, worn by players on their jackets upon arrival in Tijuana, Mexico, on Sunday, bore the number "168”.
The number refers to the victims, predominantly children, who were killed in a February 28 strike on a school in Minab, southern Iran, an attack widely attributed to the U.S.
Iran’s embassy in Hungary on Monday acknowledged the pins in a social media post, specifically referencing Minab.

The Middle East is suddenly bracing for war again. Iran fired missiles at Israel late Sunday in the first such bombardment in the two months since a ceasefire. What happened?
The truce in the Iran war that was reached in April has not spread to Lebanon, where Israel has been battling Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants. Israel says it is defending its northern communities that face Hezbollah drone and rocket fire.
Iran sees Israel’s ground invasion, with thousands of troops, and airstrikes in Lebanon as a ceasefire violation. It insists that any deal with the United States must end the fighting there. Israel disagrees.

Israel has struck Lebanon nearly 3,500 times since US announced ceasefire, says PM
Monday 8 June 2026 13:01 , Alex Croft
Israel has carried out nearly 3,500 air strikes on Lebanon and hundreds of controlled explosions since the US announced a ceasefire for the country on April 16, Lebanon's prime minister Nawaf Salam said on Monday.
The US-brokered ceasefire came into effect just after midnight on April 17, with Israeli troops still positioned deep inside southern Lebanon.
While it has largely halted air strikes on Beirut and its suburbs, it has failed to halt fighting in southern Lebanon between Israel and Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
In comments published by his office on X after a cabinet meeting, Salam said that from April 17 to June 7, Israel had carried out 3,491 air strikes, 407 controlled demolitions and six "razing" operations, or demolitions - which have left some entire villages in the southernmost strip of Lebanon entirely flattened.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
