UK-Iranian national arrested in London on suspicion of preparation of terror acts over RAF base 'attack plot'

An Iranian-UK dual national has been arrested in London on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts after the “attack plot” on an RAF base.

The 27-year-old was detained by counter-terrorism police in the borough of Westminster.

He was arrested under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 by detectives investigating an alleged plot to target RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire which is used by US planes for bombing missions against Iran.

A second man, 26, who is a UK national, has also been questioned under caution.

Police carried out searches at two properties.

Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans said: “The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry.

“As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement.

“I’d like to thank the public for their continued support and patience whilst we work through this investigation.”

The latest arrests come after Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested that Iran was behind the “plot” to target RAF Fairford.

Five men in their 20s, all from London, who were arrested on Sunday 27 September, remain on police bail.

Donald Trump has criticised the British authorities for releasing the five men on bail.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that his country handed Britain intelligence about the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford.

He said his country warned UK authorities about the “Iranian-sponsored attack” shortly before Britain’s announcement of a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Mr Burnham has said there were “strong indications” that Tehran played a part in the incident near the Gloucestershire military base.

In an interview with US broadcaster Fox News, Mr Netanyahu said: “You talked about the thing in Britain.

“Do you want to hear how absurd things are there and how far the anti-Israeli propaganda has gone?

“We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack, and it’s an Iranian-sponsored attack, and pretty much the next day they slapped sanctions on us.”

Mr Burnham on Wednesday said the Government believed Iran “played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford”, and that he could give no further details about the “ongoing, complex and serious police investigation”.

Detectives, who searched three vans near the base, found petrol but no explosives.

Police were allegedly alerted to the “attack plot” by one of the five men later arrested who reportedly dialed 999 to tip off the authorities.

RAF Fairford has been used in recent months by US bombers after former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer granted the US permission to use British bases for “defensive” strikes against Iran during the Middle East war.

After Trump criticised the decision to release the suspects, Mr Burnham insisted the UK was working closely with US and that the authorities had the situation under “the strongest grip”.
