Iran threatens new sanctions on ships passing through Strait of Hormuz

  • Iran has announced plans to establish a new exclusion zone and sanctions for ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz .
  • Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, stated the waterway will only fully reopen once the US stops its attacks, threats, and sabotage.
  • Any vessels entering the newly designated restricted area outside the waterway face being added to an Iranian sanctions list.
  • Renewed weekend exchanges of fire between US and Iranian forces pushed oil prices up to $93 per barrel and reduced shipping traffic to its lowest level since May.
  • The US claimed strikes on three Iranian oil tankers after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at two American naval vessels.
