Iranian state television has aired a video threatening Barron Trump, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Tehran tried to kill one of his sons, two developments that bring the families of America's and Israel's leaders into an already dangerous conflict.
A roughly three-minute segment broadcast by Iranian state television discussed a potential plot against Barron Trump, President Donald Trump's youngest son. The video claimed Barron was being monitored and alleged a $10 million bounty for his killing. According to Reuters, U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring said the agency was aware of it and investigates anything that could be viewed as a threat to a protected person. The agency did not say whether it had found evidence of an active plot or an actual bounty.
Iran International, which reviewed the segment, said it could not independently verify its operational claims.
In Israel, Netanyahu made the more serious claim but supplied far fewer details. Speaking by phone to Channel 14 on Monday, he said Iran had "tried to kill, to murder one of my sons," while defending the security protection granted to his family. He did not identify the son, say when the alleged attempt occurred, describe its method or explain how close it came to execution.
Netanyahu has two adult sons, Yair and Avner. Reuters reported that Yair lives in Miami, but the prime minister did not name him. Iran's mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Subsequent accounts published Tuesday identified Yair Netanyahu as the alleged target and said the purported plot unfolded while he was living in Hallandale Beach, in South Florida. Those reports, first attributed to Newsmax and repeated by other outlets, cited an unnamed U.S. law-enforcement source who said Israeli intelligence learned of the plan in December, alerted U.S. authorities, and believed Iranian operatives had conducted surveillance in the Miami area.
Those details remain unverified publicly. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department has announced a case, named suspects or confirmed an investigation involving Yair Netanyahu. Israeli authorities have not released evidence that would independently establish the alleged Florida operation.
The allegations fit a documented pattern of Iran-attributed plots against high-profile U.S. figures. In 2022, the Justice Department charged Iranian Revolutionary Guard member Shahram Poursafi with trying to arrange the murder of former national security adviser John Bolton, a case prosecutors linked to retaliation for the 2020 U.S. killing of Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani. In 2024, prosecutors charged Farhad Shakeri, whom they described as an Iranian asset, and said he told law enforcement that the Revolutionary Guard had tasked him with producing a plan to kill Trump. Those are criminal allegations, not convictions, but they show why threats from Iranian state media draw an immediate U.S. security response.
