Iran footballers finally reveal why they refused to sing national anthem

  • Iranian footballers Atefeh Ramezanisadeh and Fatemeh Pasandideh have confirmed in their first media interview on Australia's 60 Minutes programme that refusing to sing their national anthem at the Women's Asian Cup in March was a deliberate protest against Tehran's violent crackdown on anti-government demonstrators.
  • The pair faced intense criticism from Iranian domestic media, who labelled them traitors after the team stood in silence prior to their opening match defeat against South Korea in Sydney.
  • Following widespread calls for the team's protection, US President Donald Trump urged Australia to grant the squad asylum and spoke directly with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese regarding humanitarian visas.
  • While several team members were initially offered asylum, Ramezanisadeh and Pasandideh were the only two players to complete the process, eventually receiving Australian citizenship in August and joining semi-professional club Wynnum Wolves in Brisbane.
  • The athletes disclosed that staying in Australia forced them to cut contact with their families in Iran, stating that despite the personal heartbreak, they could not remain silent while young people were being killed by the regime.
