IPL auctioneer collapses and falls off stage in horror incident as Sky Sports slammed

The cricketing world were left shocked on Saturday as auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed on stage whilst overseeing the 2022 Indian Premier League auction.

The annual mega-money auction took place in Bengaluru ahead of the upcoming 2022 event, with some of the world’s best cricketers on offer to the IPL teams.

However those in attendance were left terrified midway through, as Edmeades unexpectedly collapsed whilst running the auction.

The TV cameras showed the 62-year-old lying on the floor before quickly panning away and pausing coverage.

Journalist Adil Ray slammed the broadcaster’s coverage of the fall, including Sky Sports who he believes should have ‘dropped the feed immediately’.

He tweeted: “IPL auction live. Auctioneer collapses. What do Indian broadcasters do?

“Film him lying on the floor and film bystanders reactions. Appalling. Sky Sports should have dropped feed immediately. Really hope he is ok, will be awful for his family.”

Following the collapse it has been reported that the fall came around due to postural hypotension - a sudden drop in blood pressure, normally after standing up too quickly.

Despite the heavy fall, reports have suggested that Edmeades only suffered from ‘dizziness’, but was taken to hospital for tests.

On the incident, the Indian Premier League released a statement that read: “Mr. Hugh Edmeades, the IPL Auctioneer, had an unfortunate fall due to Postural Hypotension during the IPL Auction this afternoon.

“The medical team attended to him immediately after the incident & he is stable. Mr. Charu Sharma will continue with the Auction proceedings today.”

The auction was finally able to resume as replacement auctioneer Charu Sharma took over proceedings.

Indian wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan was the man who cost the most on Saturday, as the 23-year-old sold for around £1.5 million to the Mumbai Indians.

Three of England’s biggest names were also sold at the auction, including quick bowler Mark Wood who went to the new franchise Lucknow Super Giants for £735,000.

Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow made the move to Punjab Kings for £650,000, whilst opener batsman Jason Roy was bought by new look franchise Gujarat Titans.
