Investigation launched after 91-year-old man dies in Christmas house fire

A 91-YEAR-OLD man has died following a fire at his home in Tranent shortly after midnight on Christmas evening.

Emergency services were called to Elphinstone Road at about 12.35am yesterday (Boxing Day). The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched while windows at the smoke-damaged property have been boarded up. 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a fire at a property on Elphinstone Road in Tranent, around 12.35am on Tuesday, 26 December, 2023.

"Emergency services attended, and a 91-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware.

"A joint investigation is being carried out with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
