International NHS Dumfries and Galloway staff to be welcomed with song and dance

International NHS recruits in the region will have a song and dance made about them next month.

Nursing and social care staff from India, the Philippines and Africa will be welcomed to the region with a night to celebrate the “rich” cultural diversity in the workforce.

The Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association, which has worked with the health board to organise the event, will convert their High Street base into a ballroom.

Vic McDade, the workforce sustainability manager, said: “We’re so pleased to be welcoming an increasing number of new staff from around the world who are coming to work in Dumfries and Galloway.

“Our new additions come from countries including India, the Philippines and Africa and will be playing important roles within nursing.

“All these additions add to the rich cultural diversity within NHS Dumfries and Galloway, and we had been looking for a way to celebrate this, and to welcome our new staff into the region and our health and social care family.

“This event is not only a fantastic chance to meet and get to know our amazing group of international staff who have recently joined us at NHS Dumfries and Galloway, but also celebrate one year of the international recruitment campaign that was set up to attract nurses to our region and reduce shortfalls.

“We all felt the best way to do this was by having fun, and the best way to have fun is dance.”

The former Debenhams store will be the setting for the event on Wednesday April 19, running from 6pm to 9.30pm.

No food will be provided by the organisers but they have asked people to bring a dish from their native country to share.

Vic said: “The evening will kick off with some Scottish dancing led by one of our amazing healthcare managers, and will continue with a trip around the world to do some east coast swing, African dancing, salsa, Indian dancing and finishing off with a few traditional ceilidh dances.”
