The International Longshoremen’s Association union has announced its decision to continue picketing until its demands are met. The union has stated that the demonstrations will persist around the clock, 24/7, until the United States Maritime Alliance fulfills the requests of ILA rank-and-file members.
One of the primary demands put forth by the ILA is a $5 per hour increase in pay for each of the six years covered by the upcoming contract. Additionally, the union is seeking to include 'airtight' language in the agreement that prohibits the introduction of any form of automation or semi-automation at the ports. Furthermore, the ILA is advocating for all royalties generated from containers to be allocated to the workers.
