The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced that a case concerning genocide in relation to Russia's actions in Ukraine will proceed. The case was filed by Ukraine, who accuses Russia of utilizing the concept of genocide to justify its invasive and brutal military intervention that took place two years ago. The ICJ, which serves as the United Nations' highest judicial body, has declared that it holds the jurisdiction necessary to hear the case.
Ukraine's lead attorney expressed satisfaction with the ICJ's decision and emphasized its implications. According to the attorney, this development means that the Russian Federation is legally obligated to immediately halt all military activities within Ukrainian territory. The attorney further asserted that each day of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine represents a violation of the provisional measures order issued by the ICJ.
