1. Earth-toned kitchen tiles
This year, the trend for warmer tones is set to continue. And when it comes to your kitchen tiles, whites are being replaced with more natural and earthy tones.
‘This year, soft shades inspired by natural materials like terracotta and sand are replacing cooler tones, bringing warmth and encouraging an organic feel to kitchens,’ says Carly Allison, head of product design at Fired Earth.
‘We’re also seeing a renewed appreciation for deep, earthy tones and materials with rich textures, highlighted through the popularity of some of our latest collections including Jaipur and Medin,’ she adds.
2. Patterned tiles remain popular
Patterned kitchen tiles have been making a comeback, a trend we will continue to see in 2025. Look to designs that timelessly add pattern and texture for an enduring scheme.
‘Geometric patterns are proving popular in kitchen tile design, like our Bassoon Stripe and Otura tiles, which bring a sense of movement and energy to a space, while chequerboards continue to resonate,’ says Lee Thornley, founder of Bert & May.
If busy patterns aren’t to your taste, look to tiles that add texture instead and experiment with different layouts. ‘We also expect to see materials like Zellige used in fresh and playful layouts like vertical stacking, zigzags, and diagonal patterns.’
3. Traditional and vintage-inspired designs
On the topic of patterns, more traditional, vintage-inspired designs will be everywhere in 2025. In particular, Italian-inspired tiles will be the focus of this particular trend, embracing Italian kitchen decor in a timeless way.
‘2025 is the year of the Nonna (as we are calling it) takeover in the kitchen. With Nonna – the Italian word for nana – as your muse, your decor is guaranteed to feel tried and true, rich and layered, familiar and comforting, but also totally on-trend,’ says Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra.
‘Tiles play a crucial role in the Nonna trend, bringing the charm in spades. There is some choice in how the trend is brought to life, whether through florals, replicating lemon groves, or with muted but playful patterns that can depict sunrises or sunsets. Whichever you go for, the tiles will feel like they have always been part of the room, adding layers of comfort and familiarity.’
4. Kitchen tiles in latte shades
Brown has been the unexpected color emerging in interior design trends, and we’re expecting to see a lot more of it in kitchens this year. And tiles are a great place to start.
‘The ‘latte interiors’ trend is all about embracing calming and relaxing neutral tones in your home decor. The color emulates natural tones like warm beiges and soft browns, which help to create a warm and relaxing ambiance in a room,’ says Mike Whitfield, luxury interior expert at LUSSO.
‘The latte interiors look is extremely versatile. It can be part of a completely neutral palette, or it can be a warming backdrop to add pops of color,’ he explains.
5. Retro kitchen tiles
We’ve seen many once-outdated trends making a comeback – and retro tile designs are going to be everywhere in 2025, adding color, personality, and a unique feature to kitchen schemes.
‘Retro aesthetics are dripping their way back into homes due to their nostalgic charm, with most people turning to color as a starting point and opting for warm, rich shades. Kitchen tiles are an easy way to bring such tones into space and replicate retro styling, creating punchy looks that make a statement,’ says Mike.
‘Burgundy, for example, is becoming a prominent choice in contemporary kitchen design, as this deep shade of red with purplish undertones has a great ability to add depth and character to a kitchen. This is particularly effective when brought in through the use of glossy tile finishes.’
6. Slab stone tiles
Though natural stone has often been considered a substitute for classic tile backsplash in kitchen designs, designers say slab or stone tiles are set to be big in 2025. Andrea West, interior designer and owner of Andrea West Design, says she's 'loving the all slab look in kitchens' and expects the trend will only grow from here.
'We love using a natural stone that has a beautiful veining and carry this same material onto the backsplash. This makes for a seamless and elevated look, and makes maintenance and cleaning a breeze!' she says.
Trish Knight, co-founder and designer at Vancouver-based Knight Varga Interiors, agrees, saying the combination of slab and tile adds character – and doesn't require extra cleaning.
'For maximum impact, this works best with either no upper cabinets or just floating shelves, so there is more open wall space,' says Trish.
'I think a natural stone slab (or man-made lookalikes) will continue strong through 2025. I am a big fan of marble – it brings a personal and uniqueness to an interior. Natural stone is an undeniable way to inject personality into a space, and truly is like art,' adds Jessica Cinnamon, interior designer and founder of Jessica Cinnamon Design.
7. Sustainable, eco-friendly designs
Whether you're into sleek, shiny classics or more earthy, organic color schemes, one common thread for 2025 is sustainable kitchen design – and the kitchen tiles are no exception. Niko Rasides, design director at Nicholas Anthony, says that 'sustainable and eco-friendly materials will continue to gain traction in kitchen design' throughout the year and beyond.
'Tiles made from recycled materials or natural elements like cork and bamboo will be highly sought after, reflecting a growing commitment to environmental responsibility in interior design. These eco-conscious choices not only contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle but also lend a unique and organic aesthetic to kitchen spaces,' he says.
Designer Nataly Bolshakovaagrees, 'In my observation, we're seeing a rise in nature-inspired and wood-effect decorative tiles, adding a warm and sophisticated ambiance to any space. Additionally, modern and minimalist stone or cement tiles are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms. Furthermore, there's a growing emphasis on sustainability in tile design, with reused and recycled tiles becoming sought-after for their ability to incorporate local history and heritage into decor.'
8. Intricate textures
'Heavily textured tiles add so much organic movement to a room! 3D tiles easily become a conversation piece and bring so much character!' says Jennifer Verruto, founder and CEO of San Diego-based Blythe Interiors.
In this kitchen, 3D hexagonal tiles bring visual interest to a modern kitchen design, adding depth and texture despite sticking to a classic color scheme. Paired with a minimalistic island surface and solid-colored cabinetry, the vibrant white backsplash takes the space to a whole new level.
9. Zellige tiles
For those looking for an organic, earthy take on tile, look no further than Zellige. Originally made by hand in Morocco, Zellige tiles are fashioned out of clay, then glazed and fired.
This delicate process creates perfectly imperfect, one-of-a-kind tiles – 'no two tiles are exactly the same,' says Arezoo Shafizadeh, senior interior designer at Ben Herzog Architect. She adds that she's seeing Zellige more and more, and expects them to trend in the long term.
'The beauty of these tiles comes from their unevenness and subtle color variation that embraces imperfections and is what makes Zellige tiles so uniquely lovely. Because Zellige tiles aren't uniform (and sometimes have sharp or chipped edges), they are ideal for walls and backsplashes but not recommended for floors. And because of their variation, they are difficult to install and it's essential to have a professional tile installer,' she adds.
10. Micro tiles
'Having just returned from the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, the largest kitchen and bath trade show in North America, I saw a lot of small mosaic tiles with an irregular handmade look installed as full kitchen backsplashes,' says Trish.
These micro tile designs took on every material, from natural stone to recycled glass and ceramic, says Trish, and 'tight minimal grout lines' were 'tone on tone with the tile.' She suggests using a darker tile and grout or using a combination of tile and slap if smaller tiles make you nervous about cleaning the kitchen.
