Inter Milan legend picks preferred Champions League final opponent ahead of Man City vs Real Madrid

Inter Milan legend Javier Zanetti hopes his former side face Manchester City in the Champions League final rather than Real Madrid.

City host the 14-time European Cup winners at the Etihad Stadium with a place in the Istanbul final next month up for grabs. The victors of this evening's clash will take on Inter after the Nerazzurri beat cross-town rivals AC Milan in the other semi-final.

The encounter is on a knife edge and all square after the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this month. Vinicius Jr put Real ahead in the first half of that encounter, but Kevin De Bruyne equalised for Pep Guardiola's men.

City are chasing a place in the Champions League final for the second time in their history as they seek their maiden European Cup. As part of it, they are also aiming to seal the treble, also including the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

The victors will face Inter, who confirmed their place in the Champions League final for the first time since 2010. Lautaro Martinez found the back of the net to seal a 1-0 win at the San Siro and a 3-0 victory overall on aggregate over AC Milan.

Zanetti captained Inter to Champions League glory when they last won the title in 2010, which was part of a treble. And the now Inter vice-president has made it clear he wants to face City in Istanbul next month due to Real's pedigree in the competition.

“I’d like to avoid Real Madrid because this competition seems made for them,” Zanetti told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, the most important thing is to have arrived here. It was a difficult path, it’s not easy to play a derby in the semi-finals. I did and I was defeated in 2003.”
