Inter Milan chief drops Romelu Lukaku transfer hint as Paulo Dybala targeted

Inter Milan chief executive Beppe Marotta insists the club must not be 'hasty' in their pursuit of re-signing Romelu Lukaku this summer.

The Belgium international has been linked with a return to I Nerazzurri after failing to live up to the heights since his big-money move to Chelsea last August. Lukaku has scored just eight Premier League goals in 26 appearances for the Blues, with the forward netting a further seven times in cup competitions.

Lukaku and Kai Havertz have been battling it out for the central striker berth since Lukaku spoke out about his desire to return to Inter one day. This was after he stated his disappointment of being left on the bench at Chelsea, with Timo Werner also being given a run in the side.

He told Sky back in December: "I will always have Inter in my heart and I genuinely hope to one day go back to play there. I am in love with Italy, this is the time to let people know what really happened, without bad-mouthing anyone, because that’s not my style.

"Now it’s the right time to share my feelings. I have always said that I have Inter in my heart: I know I will return to Inter, I really hope so. I am in love with Italy, this is right moment to talk and let people know what really happened."

Six months on and Lukaku continues to be linked with a return to the San Siro, after he scored 24 league goals in 36 games to help them to the Serie A title in 2020/21. Amid rumours suggesting he could be in line for an immediate return, Marotta does not want the club to get "anxious" when negotiating these deals.

He said during the Atleticamente Insieme - La Riconquista event: "We must not get anxious and do things hastily: we did something in advance. I must say that the hard core of the team will remain."

Paulo Dybala has also been backed to join Inter after leaving Juventus. The Argentine allowed his contract to run out this summer and is available to sign for a club on a free transfer. He spent seven seasons at the Old Lady, scoring 115 goals in almost 300 matches.

The Inter CEO added: "Where will Dybala play next year? In sport what is called 'white lies' (laughs) must be accepted. Right now I don't know, but obviously the hope is that he can play with us."
