Inter Miami CF has made a significant addition to their roster ahead of the 2024 Leagues Cup by signing River Plate defender Héctor David Martínez. Martínez, who has previously made five appearances for the Argentinian club, will now be part of Inter Miami's official lineup for the upcoming competition.
The center-back began his professional career at River Plate, progressing through the youth system before making his first-team debut under Marcelo Gallardo in December 2018. He also had a stint at Defensa y Justicia, where he scored two goals in over a year before returning to River Plate on loan and eventually on a permanent basis.
Internationally, Martínez has represented the Paraguay national team in 11 matches. With Inter Miami currently facing injuries in their defensive line, Martínez is expected to play a key role alongside defenders Jordi Alba, Tomás Avilés, and Marcelo Weigandt. The team's key center-back, Serhiy Kryvtsov, sustained an ankle injury during a recent match, leading to midfielder Sergio Busquets temporarily filling in that position.
As Inter Miami prepares to defend their Leagues Cup title, they will kick off the 2024 edition by hosting Puebla at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The team enters the competition in a strong position, sitting atop the MLS Eastern Conference with 53 points from 25 games.
The Herons will then face Tigres UANL at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, aiming to secure a spot in the knockout round of the tournament.
