The Eagles are all about adding talent to the roster, and with Quez Watkins on injured reserve, the team has signed future Hall of Fame wide receiver Julio Jones.
Jones is the second veteran added to the practice squad in the past week, joining cornerback Bradley Roby, who was signed to the practice squad two weeks ago and then played 25 snaps in the win over the Rams.
With Howie Roseman replicating his 2022 action of adding key veterans for a challenging stretch run, we’re looking at the instant analysis of Jones’s big signing.
Jones fits what Philly needs
With Quez Watkins out, a healthy Jones can be a quality complement to a unit that already features A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Olamide Zaccheaus.
Jones is a red zone standout, and can make plays from the slot.
Jones is family
Philadelphia is full of SEC talent and guys who’ve played at Alabama. The former SEC star is a big brother figure to All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown, meaning there will be no friction, while allowing the Eagles receiving corps to get that much better and accountable.
Jones has big game experience
Jones will now play a 13th NFL season after the Falcons made him a first-round draft pick out of Alabama in 2011.
Philadelphia can use a veteran presence at the wide receiver position, and Jones is certified, having logged 903 receptions for 13,629 yards and 81 touchdowns.
Last year Jones caught 24 passes for 299 yards and a pair of scores in 10 games with Tampa Bay.
Red Zone solution
The Eagles are among the worst in the NFL currently in the red zone scoring percentages, and the 6-3, 220 pounds Jones offers great size and versatility for every situation.
