When the Miami Dolphins came on the clock at pick No. 51, there were options at some of their positions of need, such as tight end, offensive tackle and guard.
However, Miami opted to take South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith with their selection, adding him to an extremely deep room that includes Xavien Howard, Jalen Ramsey, Nik Needham and Kader Kohou.
Smith wasn’t an inconsistent contributor during his time as a Gamecock. He made plays, but he was also flagged with a level of consistency that won’t be acceptable at the pro level.
With veterans ahead of him, a respected defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio and a former great in cornerbacks coach Sam Madison, Smith will be surrounded by people who can really teach him and help him with his development in the NFL.
The question here will be whether or not the Dolphins should’ve used their selection on Georgia tight end Darnell Washington, Florida guard O’Cyrus Torrence or Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones instead.
That question won’t be answered until at least at the end of the draft weekend, as Miami still has opportunities to address those positions. However, even after that, there’s a chance that Smith has the best career of all of them and ends up replacing one of either Howard or Ramsey long-term.
