A schoolboy, aged 7, sadly died four weeks after being diagnosed with Stevens–Johnson syndrome. Tragically, Chance Davies died just 15 months after his father Alan.
The devastated family has said the father and son were inseparable and would go 'everywhere together'. Alan's brother Brian says his nephew Chance wasn't the same after his dad's death and missed him terribly.
Brian said: "Unfortunately Chance found his dad in the bathroom, he did not know what to do so rang Alan's business partner to come and help him. He would have been six when Alan died.
"As a family, it was devastating to lose not only a son but a nephew at the same time. Chance had missed his dad so much and was not happy, with everything that he witnessed as well."
Alan was diabetic and died aged 46 from a heart attack. Brian says his brother was a devoted father-of-three who always put his family first.
Chance, who was like his dad's 'shadow', was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma and developed a severe reaction to some of the treatment he was receiving. This condition, Stevens–Johnson syndrome is a rare but serious skin reaction that's usually caused by taking certain medicines, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Brian, 46, said: "It was traumatic but the only comfort we can take as a family over the last few years is that fact that Chance and Alan are back together. Since Alan passed we could see that Chance was not a happy child.
"Before Alan died, Chance was his shadow, they were like two peas in a pod. Grief never goes away but it is so important that as a family we are open and honest about how we feel."
Since Chance's death, his school Mount Primary in Wallasey has run several different initiatives to honour his memory. The latest is a football match called the Chance Davies memorial cup.
Brian said: "It is these little things that help us because we know people are trying to keep Chance's memory alive. I was taken aback when I heard about the football match.
"Chance was really popular in school and his loss must have been devastating for them and as a family, we are just in awe of everything his classmates have done for him."
The match will take place on May 19 at 4pm on the Wallacre field in Wallasey.
