Insomniac’s Venom game may still be in development, despite claims it had been cancelled

The future of Insomniac’s Venom game is up in the air, according to a few conflicting statements from voice actors and industry insiders, leaving fans confused and concerned. Though never formally announced, a massive leak into the upcoming slate of games by Insomniac – the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine – revealed that the studio was in the middle of developing their own Venom title.

Now, conflicting reports surrounding whether or not the superhero game is happening is giving fans both hope and despair in equal measure, all for a game that’s received complete radio silence from its studio.

Rumors of cancellation started with a podcast

According to Miles Morales’ voice actor, Nadji Jeter, a game focused on Venom may have been cancelled. The primary reason, given on the podcast Film It Love (around the 31:00 minute mark), was the death of Tony Todd in 2024, who voiced Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Jeter claimed that he was shown the beginning of the game by Insomniac, stating “we were gonna have a Venom game and a Venom DLC, but we lost Tony Todd”.

While this reason does seem sound, especially since the leaked information had initially set a Venom title for release in 2025 and there’s been nary a peep from Insomniac well into 2026, an industry insider refuted the claim of cancellation in a cryptic post.

Industry insiders refute claims of cancellation

Jason Schreier, a well known gaming industry journalist, responded to a thread on Reset Era discussing Jeter’s statement. Schreier simply wrote “this isn’t true” in a comment on a thread titled “Leaked Venom game by Insomniac cancelled due to the passing of Tony Todd, says Nadji Jeter in interview”. While this short comment could mean that the game hasn’t been cancelled, it could also mean that the game wasn’t happening at all.

It seems more likely that Schreier was saying that the game is still happening, which is backed up by another developer’s comment on the same thread stating that the game was discussed as recently as GDC 2026, an annual conference for video game developers.

With all that said, a Venom-focused title by Insomniac still makes sense even after the sad passing of Tony Todd. Insomniac has, so far, enjoyed having smaller games to connect stories between major releases. A Venom game could work to cut down waiting time for new content between Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, though Insomniac is likely more focused on their upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game for this fall.
