Manchester United insider Mick Brown has suggested there is a chance the club might terminate Luke Shaw’s contract in the near future.
The Red Devils could take the “difficult” decision in light of his persistent fitness struggles.
Manchester United paid a handsome £30 million fee to sign Shaw from Southampton in the summer of 2014. Over the last decade, the left-back has impressed with his smart defending, ability to read the game, and creative chops. Unfortunately, Shaw has been exceptionally unlucky with injuries. He has suffered major setbacks in six of the last 10 seasons and missed a plethora of games as a result.
This term, Shaw missed the first eight games of the 2024-25 Premier League season with a knee injury and three more with a calf issue. He made off-the-bench cameos on Matchdays 12 and 13 before picking up another calf problem.
Mick Brown Suggests Manchester United Could Terming Luke Shaw’s Contract
As the January transfer window nears, Old Trafford insider Brown believes Manchester United could have to have a difficult conversation with one of their longest-serving players, Shaw.
“They’re a far better team with him at left-back,” said Brown (via CaughtOffside).
“But they know all about his injury situation and it’s gone on for far too long. So they’ve got to make a decision for the player, the club, and for England, about his future at Man United. They say it’s a half strain or a hamstring strain, but I’ve never seen a calf strain keep someone out for the amount of time he has been out for.”

He added:
“But whatever the issue is, he’s not playing and he’s collecting a big wage which could be used to bring in a new player if they can get him off the books.
“It might be the best decision for them that they let him go, because we know they want to bring somebody else in in his position. It’s a difficult decision because everybody knows how good he can be when he’s fit.”
Brown concluded by adding:
“Then you’ve got the issue of finding a club who are willing to sign him knowing his history because it’s not like his contract is running out this season or anything.
“But if it becomes a possibility, I think they might have to move him on.”
Shaw, 29, has played 278 games for the club in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing 38 assists. His £150,000 gross/week contract runs out in June 2027.
