Inside the Northumberland seaside village named one of 2022's top staycation destinations

It's a crisp January morning, the sky meets the sea to create uninterrupted blue (admittedly different shades) and the waves are breaking against the shore.

There are definitely worse ways to spend a working day than exploring a village on the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Beadnell has been getting a lot of attention lately. Sykes Holiday Cottages named it one of the top UK staycation destinations for 2022, whilst the Times dubbed it one of the coolest postcodes to move to this year.

But what is life actually like in this sleepy coastal village, which has a population of less than 500?

Jen Hall, who has lived in the village her whole life and whose family have been present in Beadnell since the 1770s, said: "It's a wonderful place to live. We've got a group of people who mostly retired here in the last 20 years who have done a lot for the village.

"They set up Beadnell Community Volunteers 10 years ago next month and they've raised £71,000 to help the village. They've done the playground, planted trees, put up Christmas lights, and they run events too.

"As a tourist destination, it's got wonderful beaches for many miles either side - and until comparatively recently it was really unspoiled."

The village also has the pub voted the 'Best in Northumberland ' at last year's National Pub and Bar Awards. Landlord Michael Dawson has lived in Beadnell since 2009 and grew up in nearby Seahouses.

He said: "It's always been a fantastic holiday destination, there's a fantastic bay. The only thing that's not guaranteed is the weather.

Michael has just returned from a trip to Colombia and said: "Beadnell rivals any destination in the world during the nice weather."

Wayne Johnson, who grew up in nearby Swinhoe, moved back to the area after 10 years in London. He said: " The best thing is that you get a work life balance.

"I was working all hours of the day and moving home gives you that time that you lost. You can equate time and money and realise which you value most and from moving back here, it's time."

However, despite the seemingly idyllic vision of Beadnell, there are downsides.

Jen said: "Particularly over the last 20 years, the number of properties that have migrated from second homes or permanent residences to commercial holiday lets is that the house prices have been pushed up.

"We now don't have the social housing or the private lets for people, so we can't fill the job vacancies in the area, and that's meant we've lost good facilities because of that."

Pub Landlord Michael hopes that the village's new neighbourhood plan can strike a balance between supporting tourism and those who live in the village.

He said: "As someone who works in the hospitality industry I can't complain about the influx of tourists because they're my livelihood. They are without a doubt the driving force of the economy here.

"Obviously, there are challenges and difficulties regarding traffic, traffic management and car parking and it puts pressure on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

"And obviously the house prices here, it's like a bubble. They are so attractive to investors and they get turned into holiday lets, but hopefully the new neighbourhood plan will put in measures to control and curtail that."

"I think these are things that need to be reviewed and managed but we can't forget how strongly we depend upon tourism in this area and we need to embrace it."
