Inside the 'cesspit' shopping centre with shuttered pub and shops set for demolition

This is the 'cesspit' shopping centre set to undergo a makeover after being scheduled for demolition.

The Kingstanding Shopping Centre in Birmingham will be mowed down to make way for a Lidl after planning permission was granted.

Among the parade of businesses to be bulldozed, the Kingstanding Pub that was heavily damaged in a 2019 fire is also scheduled for demolition.

Only three shops remain open in the shopping centre, which include Farm Foods, Card Factory, and Domino's pizza.

Images from the centre show boarded-up shops peppered with graffiti.

The current plans show how 118 parking spots will be added for shoppers going to Lidl.

Furthermore, the supermarket will be open seven days a week including bank holidays.

Regarding the approval of the Lidl, Cllr Darius Sandhu told BirminghamMail: "I’m delighted that the planning application to build a Lidl on this site has been approved subject to conditions.

"Hopefully, this will lead to further investment in our area, as well as an increase in footfall in Kingstanding circle and for surrounding businesses.

"For many years we have seen a lack of investment in our area, but we will keep pushing the council to invest in suburbs like Oscott.

"We will continue monitoring the site throughout the next few stages and look forward to having a new supermarket on our doorstep, helping to regenerate the Circle."

Cllr Rick Payne (Cons, Kingstanding) added: "I am happy to see that this application has been approved, Cllr Sandhu and I have been pushing for more investment in Kingstanding over the last two years and hopefully this will now see further investment in our area as well as being the next step in regenerating Kingstanding Circle."

Cllr Barbara Dring (Lab, Oscott) said: “I am looking forward to the development on the Kingstanding Circle and the development of the old Kingstanding Pub that was burnt down some years ago.

"The Lidl is to be welcomed as the first major supermarket in the immediate area."
