Inside Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney's Tap and Run Notts pub that's reopened in £1.3m rebuild

A much-loved gastropub in Nottinghamshire has reopened after it was ravaged by a fire in 2022. The Tap and Run, in the village of Upper Broughton, on the Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire border, is welcoming back customers following a £1.3 million re-build.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of June 11, 2022, after laundry ignited in a tumble dryer. The entire first and second floors were burnt out, and the roof was destroyed. The ground floor was so smoke and water-damaged that it had to be stripped right back to brick.

The pub forms part of The Cat and Wickets Pub Company which is co-owned by England cricketer Stuart Broad and former Nottinghamshire and England international Harry Gurney. The village venue was named Pub of the Year at the Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards 2021 and was also picked out by The Times as one of Britain's top 30 places to visit for a Sunday lunch.

The pub re-opened on Monday, June 26, and,as you can see from a photo gallery put together by Leicestershire Live, it looks incredible. The layout is similar to before, but with a few small changes including a smaller bar to allow for more space for casual dining and drinking, and there is extra fixed seating providing more comfortable dining spaces throughout.

As part of the re-build, some big changes have been made in the 'back of house' including creating a new, larger kitchen.

Avril Gurney, director at The Cat and Wickets Pub Company, has been working with interior designers Sarum Design to give the Tap and Run a new look and feel ahead of its re-launch. According to the designers, the look is inspired by the surroundings countryside, and includes greens and earthy colours, with design details such as rattan pendants and planters, oak tables and a marble bar top with exposed brickwork.

The exterior looks similar to how it was before, but the former concrete tiled roof has been replaced with slate, which the building would originally have had. The majority of the original Tap and Run team are returning to the venue, led by the management team of Jack Whitehead, Anna Mooney and Laura Symington.

Talking about the re-opening of the Tap and Run, Mr Gurney said: "It's been a really long year and we are absolutely thrilled to be opening the pub back up. Over the last few weeks my wife Avril has worked tirelessly to ensure we have, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful gastropubs around. Here's to the second innings."
