Rohan Smith paid tribute to practising Muslims Nene Macdonald and Aidan Sezer following Leeds Rhinos’ stunning win over Catalans Dragons on Saturday. Papua New Guinea international Macdonald and Australian half-back Sezer played key roles as Leeds come from 22-8 down at the break to win 32-22.
Macdonald played the game while fasting during Ramadan, with Smith praising them during his post-match address in the changing room. The Rhinos’ ‘Behind the Game’ footage posted on their social media channels shows Smith hailing his team after their famous win before singling out Macdonald and Sezer.
“There’s a lot of belief, that’s how to play,” said the Leeds head coach. “Don’t worry about the scoreboard, it will take care of itself. Well done, it was a really good game. I don’t know if anyone has done any fasting but when you’re first getting started – particularly when you’re trying to compete – obviously Nene and Sezer are doing some of that to be the people that they are.

“You’ve got to do what’s right and follow your faith, whatever that looks like. Lots of respect to you guys doing that full-time, part-time or anywhere in between. Taking care of your faith and your beliefs is important. Let’s enjoy this afternoon as well – hang out, families, all that type of stuff. We don’t get much opportunity, but the next challenge then is to get ready for Friday night and Hull KR.”
Sezer had been ill in the build-up to the Catalans game but had been fasting earlier in the week. “It’s a very special time for Muslims around the world,” said the playmaker.
“Nene put in an unbelievable performance and he’s done it after not consuming any water or food. To come out and perform how he did is a testament to the professional he is. Hopefully, when I get over a bit of a bug I can join him and we can do it together.”
Leeds have players born in England, New Zealand, Australia, Mali, Poland and Papua New Guinea in their squad. “That’s the culture we have at this club, it’s very diverse,” added Sezer. "We get behind one another’s faith, creed or culture and I think Leeds Rhinos as a club is very good at doing that. The playing group really supports that, so it’s all positive.”
