The Lane Before the Showroom
The address your auto-driver knows is not the address that matters. Chikankari's public face is Aminabad and Hazratganj, glass-fronted shops, folded stacks of white-on-white georgette, a salesman who can name seventeen stitches in two minutes. The address that matters is a gali off Phool Wali Gali in the old city, or a courtyard behind a residential block in Daliganj, where the actual stitching happens. These workrooms are not hidden exactly, but they are not on any map. You find them by asking the shop owner where his pieces come from, and then asking that person the same question, and following the answer two or three steps back.
