Inside Liverpool contract talks as Mohamed Salah the hero for Egypt to extend AFCON absence

Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Thursday, January 27.

Inside Liverpool contract negotiations

“They know what I want. I'm not asking for crazy stuff.”

Mohamed Salah caused fresh concern in the Liverpool fanbase earlier this month when again piling the pressure onto FSG to resolve his future.

Out of contract in 2023, the Egyptian has made it clear he wants to stay at Anfield. Yet there has been no breakthrough in negotiations, with the forward now 12 months away from being free to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.

It’s quite clear that should he stay put on Merseyside, he would become the club’s highest-paid earner and the best paid player in their history, with it safe to assume that his demands would perhaps put him on par with the wealthiest earners in the Premier League, if not in Europe.

From the outside, the issue there would be FSG have a clear wage structure in place and giving Salah figures in line with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne would perhaps be substantially more than the rest of the Reds squad.

Whether Liverpool’s American owners could afford such figures, only their accountants could say, but while no-one would disagree with the 29-year-old’s status befitting such a significant wage, FSG are businessmen who have to do what’s best for the club.

Mohamed Salah the hero as Egypt advance

Mohamed Salah was the hero as the Liverpool forward kept alive hopes of Africa Cup of Nations glory with Egypt.

Salah netted the decisive spot kick as the Pharaohs beat Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties following a tense goalless draw against Ivory Coast in their round of 16 clash on Wednesday in Cameroon.

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly was the only player to miss when his effort was saved by substitute Egypt goalkeeper Gabaski.

Egypt, who had scored just twice during the group stage, were again largely uninspired, although Salah - who provided one of the goals - came close with one first-half effort.
