Kate Garraway has given an insight into her and Derek Draper's secret trip to Mexico for treatment.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, joined her poorly husband - who needs round the clock care after contracting Covid in March 2020 - for a secret trip to Monterrey in Mexico before Christmas.
And opening up about the trip, Kate admits it has given her real hope that there is treatment out there which will help Derek, after the doctor found out about Derek's condition through the family's documentary, Finding Derek.
Speaking about the Mexican trip, she told ITV's Good Morning Britain: "It's all come about because of the first documentary.
"This is a doctor who works in the US and he's been working for years in clinical trials of this treatment in the US and he's just waiting for approval on it and of course, 11 years ago there was no Covid, so he's been looking at it for other things.
"I can't say too much about it because I'm bound not to but when he saw the documentary, he'd already started helping people with the impact of Covid. He saw the documentary about Derek and was like, I can help this man."
Kate admitted the trip took months to plan, as she tried to work out if the treatment would help.
"So there was months of research from me to look into it and make sure it was very safe because the last thing we want to do was anything that was negative.
"In the end, the most logistically - because we hadn't really taken Derek out the house at this point - so it was very difficult to get him abroad," she added.
Kate says it was tough getting Derek to Mexico and despite them just being a quarter of a way through the treatment, she knows that - if it works - it will change not only their lives but the lives of many others.
She explained: "He has a centre out in Monterrey, Mexico for medical work and it was easier to get him there than anywhere else where he practices. We're about less than a quarter of the way through this treatment.
"I don't want to say too much but if this works, it will be world hope that we get. It will have an impact not just for sufferers of Covid but for all sorts of conditions. It's a massive hope for us. We're very lucky that there was a documentary so he heard of Derek."
"He's a very extreme case, therefore he's useful as a trial, because if he can work it out with Derek, it gives a lot of hope to people who are less ill from Covid and another things. I feel very lucky that he's been able to get help from this," she shared.
Kate also praised the team at British Airways for supporting her and Derek during their journey, as she admitted she feels hopeful about the future and how she and the kids can help Derek.
"The help British Airways gave us! They gave us so much support and they're a massively helpful team," she explained, "We're seeing flickers of hope, what it's led to though is more information on how we can help Derek in a very practical way."
