Inside Janet Jackson's fallout with niece Paris - awards 'snub' to phone-grabbing spat

Janet Jackson and Paris Jackson have had a difficult relationship since the death of pop icon Michael Jackson in 2009.

After the shock passing of the Thriller hitmaker, who was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive at his home in Holmby Hills in Los Angeles, the famous Jackson family rallied round to show the world they were united in grief.

Michael’s three children - Prince, Paris and Prince Michael Jackson II, affectionately nicknamed Blanket - were in attendance at the public memorial service one month after his death, and were put under the guardianship of the pop star’s mother Katherine.

However, cracks soon began to show, and there were reports of jealousy driving a wedge between the Jackson relatives, as well as behind-the-scenes drama.

We take a look at Janet and Paris’ relationship over the years…

Michael Jackson’s funeral

Back in 2009, Janet appeared to be the supportive auntie to Paris, as the then-11-year-old spoke briefly at her father’s funeral.

The distraught youngster decided to make a speech at the last minute, usurping Janet who was due to speak to the star-studded audience about her brother.

Paris broke down as she was comforted by auntie Janet with her reportedly unscripted speech bringing tears to the eyes of the 2.5 billion people watching at home.

“Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine,” she wept, as Janet urged her to “speak up” so everyone could hear her talk for the first time in public.

“I just wanted to say I love him so much,” Paris added, as she was embraced by Janet and led off the stage.

Kidnapping drama

A few years after Michael’s funeral, Paris and Janet were back in the spotlight and rumours of their turbulent relationship were under scrutiny.

Back in 2012, Paris made the wild allegation that members of the Jackson family had “kidnapped” her grandmother, after she alleged she hadn’t seen or heard from her in more than eight days.

The incident was brought to an end, as Katherine read a bizarre statement while seated alongside three of her children - Janet, Randy and Rebbie - while in Arizona.

“There are rumours going around about me that I have been kidnapped and held against my will. I am here today to let everybody to know that I am fine,” she stated.

“My children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will. It’s very stupid for people to think that,” Katherine assured.

Phone-grabbing fight

Shortly after after the bizarre kidnap allegations, shock footage emerged of Paris and Janet having an altercation at the family’s gated estate.

Security footage, obtained by MailOnline, showed Janet allegedly slapping her niece, and calling her a “spoiled little b***h”.

In the video, the All For You hitmaker appears to try and grab the phone in Paris’ hand, while her security guard tries to hold her back.

“This is our house. Not the Jackson family house. Get the f*** out!” Paris is said to have screamed at her auntie.

The extraordinary fight between the relatives continued inside the property, with Randy and Jermaine storming the house where Paris and her two brothers lived.

Police were called, and while no arrests were made, an attorney for matriarch Katherine Jackson confirmed details of the fight, which was reportedly over Michael’s will.

“After exiting their vehicles, Jackson family members ran up to Michael's children as they yelled and began to aggressively grab at the cellphones in their hands,” Sandra Ribera said in a statement.

The video later shows Janet and Jermaine arguing on the pavement outside the gated community.

Neither Janet or Paris have ever commented on the spat.

Awards ceremony ‘snub’

Pop star Janet was honoured with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2018, but eyebrows were raised when it was revealed Paris was not invited to celebrate with her famous auntie at the ceremony.

Janet’s mother Katherine, Paris’ brother Prince and aunt Rebbie were all in the audience cheering on the music icon as she accepted her award, but Paris was nowhere to be seen.

Paris later hit out at the rumours about her no-show.

Taking to Instagram, she claimed she had never been invited, and had no idea her brother, grandmother and auntie were going to the ceremony.

“No one from my mgmt [management] reached out to me about attending Billboards or about the award, and no one from my family did either,” Paris fired.

“As amazing and as sh*tty as things can be, it is no one’s business but ours. I understand that some of you feel some sort of connection or need to be apart of our lives considering you watched us grow up,” she continued.

Paris alluded to her turbulent relationship with some of her family members as she touched upon “drama” with some of her relatives.

“My family, specifically, and a good number of others… well, our drama is broadcasted worldwide through media. But that doesn’t mean our family issues are any different from yours. Ours are just made public,” she added.

Paris later shared a sweet snap of her and Janet pulling silly faces together, as she congratulated her auntie on her achievement.

Fall-out over funeral costs

Janet and Paris were said to back at each other’s throats once again in 2018, when the pair reportedly clashed over who would pay for Joe Jackson’s funeral.

The patriarch of the famous family, who managed The Jackson Five, died after a battle with pancreatic cancer, and was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles, which is where his son Micheal is buried.

According to Radar Online, Janet was mortified when Paris offered to pay.

“Janet has said she’ll pay for it because she believes Paris paying for it would be an embarrassment to the family,” an insider told the outlet.

But Paris hit back at the reports, and said she and her auntie “haven’t argued for over six years”.

“Janet and I haven’t argued in over six years, stop with these stupid rumours. I have nothing but love for my family and they all know it,” she wrote on social media.

Hopes of reconciliation

Paris has followed in her father’s footsteps and launched her own music career, and she recently spoke about a possible collaboration with her auntie.

When asked if she would team up with Janet, Paris refused to rule out the chance of reconciling with her in the future.

“We haven’t talked about it, but I’m not opposed to it,” she told Access Daily.

“I love collaborating with all kinds of artists. The genre doesn’t really turn me off, doesn’t matter what genre it is. I can’t say that I see myself doing trap music anytime in the near future, but I’m open to everything.”
