While many know Darius for his 2001 stint on Pop Idol, the singer had actually tried his hand at reality TV auditioning for Popstars on rival network ITV.
The singer tragically died aged 41, it was announced by his heartbroken family on Tuesday with fans taking to social media to pay tribute and share their memories of the star.
One iconic moment which was treasured by the nation was Darius' audition for Popstars, which saw him try to impress the judges by hitting the high notes and dancing to Britney's one more time.
The clip showed the singer sporting a slicked back ponytail, facial hair and rocking a black polo neck as he entered the room.
Nigel Lythgoe asked Darius: "What are you going to sing for us?"
To which he replied: "I'm going to sing your favourite Nigel, Baby One More Time. No-one else sang it".
As Darius continued talking, Nigel firmly told him: "Darius, forget the spiel. Let's get on with it".
The Colourblind hitmaker went on to sing his heart out - attempting some high notes and dramatic dance moves.
Songwriter Paul Adam told Nicki Chapman: "He has talent, but I'm not sure if he's the right person to fit into a five piece band or even a 100 piece band".
Nigel added: "To do something like he has just done there which is a complete show off that doesn't work is crazy."
Darius was promptly given a no, with stars like Kym Marsh and Michelle Heaton seen crying as he said goodbye to them.
He later found fame on Pop Idol after ditching his ponytail for a spikey-haired look.
Fans took to Twitter to comment on his iconic audition after hearing of his passing.
One wrote: "So sad … thoughts with Darius family right now x always our Britney."
Another added: "So sad to hear about Darius and just a year older than me. I still remember watching Pop Idol all those years ago where he sang Britney’s ‘…Baby One More Time’ - iconic performance! Rest in Peace Darius".
A third fan chimed: "I’m so shocked. Once got him to sing the Britney line to me. Such a sweet guy."
