Inside Claire Byrne's family life as she's reported to be 'done deal' for Late Late job

Claire Byrne has said that her and husband Gerry Scollan have a very happy home and family life.

The RTÉ morning radio and Ireland's Smartest TV quiz show host finished with TV presenting last year to focus on life at home with nine-year-old Patrick, eight-year-old Jane and five-year-old Emma.

The 47-year-old Laois native is now favourite to take The Late Late Show hotseat, RSVP Live reported.

She said: "We are a very happy household. My children are a bit more curious about what I do now... sometimes they ask me if I am famous and I just say 'No! No one is famous, it is a small country.

"Outside of work I feel like I am just a Mammy."

Speaking to the RTÉ Guide she said you are never just a mammy and that a lot of her focus is around what her children are doing and making sure they have enough food.

She described a very busy week in the RTÉ studio with her 10am radio slot.

She said: "I am gone every morning. I leave the house at 6.50am so I am not there for their going to school bit everyday and I think that is enough really to be able to tech them about the value of work."

The Mountrath native said being absent on Monday night's too due to her Claire Byrne Live current affairs TV programme was a step too far for her family.

Claire has returned to screens for a brand new quiz show called Ireland's Smartest. She's also hotly tipped to take over from Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show.

She said: "I am still prepared to take on TV things because I love it, but I have a responsibility to three children under 10 and I must bear that in mind too. It is just about getting that right. If I didn't have my family, I would probably be taking on everything and that is always how it was."

She admitted that losing her father two years ago changed her perspective.

She stated that the experience showed her the brevity to life and that it is essential to live your best life.

"That was lesson one and then lesson two questioning how important is it really to keep pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion.

"Is it not more important to keep enjoying the people around you? The people you love who may not be there next year? I think those lessons combined to clarify how I feel about work and homelife and all those things," she added.

After a flurry of bets over the weekend, Ladbrokes made the decision to suspend betting on the next Late Late host with a spokesperson suggesting Claire Byrne was "a done deal" for the role.

RTE has not yet officially announced the next host of its flagship chat show. Ryan Tubridy hosts his last Late Late Show on May 26.
