Inside Carol Kirkwood's love life with 'handsome' mystery fiancé after announcing engagement

Carol Kirkwood has just announced her recent engagement to her mystery partner.

The BBC Breakfast presenter delighted her colleagues and viewers as she confirmed she is getting married on Monday morning's instalment of the show.

After being probed by colleagues Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, Carol, 60, revealed that her partner popped the question during a recent holiday.

The Scottish presenter has previously opened up about her new other half's romantic side, despite the fact little is known about who he is.

Speaking with Prima Magazine in June 2021, Carol discussed her new relationship with the mystery man: "I don't want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny - he's always making me laugh.

"And extremely handsome, as well.

"He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic - it's 2.45am and he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses."

Carol added: "He is the best thing that's ever happened to me, without a shadow of a doubt."

The two reportedly met around 2016, and despite never revealing his identity or what he does for a living, she has described him as ‘very handsome'.

Carol has lived in Maidenhead since splitting from cricket player Jimmy Kirkwood, who she was married to for 18 years from 1990 to 2008.

A reason for the split has never been revealed publicly, but Carol has opened up about her heartbreak on past occasions.

Speaking to the Radio Times, she once said: "I found myself when I got divorced.

"I started to do things and to think, 'I’m not going to say no, I’m going to say yes!' I’m braver now."

She also told The Sun : "I was married for a long time and I got married quite young so it’s nice doing things I have the freedom to do now."

In her 2021 book, Under The Greek Moon, Carol admitted the divorce was ‘all so shocking to me’, and she recalled how she’d break down in tears behind the scenes on BBC Breakfast before putting on a smile for the camera again.

"In a funny way though, that helped with the healing process. I put my grief into a compartment which I kept separate from my work, otherwise I’d have ended up in a puddle of tears. Work kept me going," she explained.

Her closest companion following the divorce was then her pet cat Donald, who the couple adopted together in 2000, but he sadly died in November 2020.

In an interview with the Daily Express, Carol previously concluded that Donald "ruled the roost" at home.

"If I'm late back from work, I get a right telling off," she explained.

"He can do no wrong. He'll sit outside his treats cupboard, look at me with his big green eyes and I simply can't say no."
