'Insane queues' for free pancakes reported across Ireland

Crazy queues were spotted across the country as festive foodies looked to score some delicious pancakes.

One massive queue stretching past several premises on Dublin's Grafton Street caught the eye of onlookers.

Discover Dublin posted a video of large crowd lining up outside Gino's Gelato on the busy shopping street, who had a special deal on pancakes from 9am to midday this morning.

The outlet was offering free sugar and lemon and free Nutella crepes from 9am to 12pm today.

One commenter was quick off the mark to point out: "They must be free", while another joked: "Do people not know how to make pancakes?"

An empathetic commenter said they felt sorry for the workers after witnessing the crowd.

Pancake Tuesday also known as Shrove Tuesday is a longstanding tradition in Ireland, which offered a final blowout before a period of fasting and due to eggs being forbidden for lent, pancakes were the food of choice.

A second video shows large queues lining out for pancakes at Gino's Gelato on George's Street in Dublin.

In Cork, a huge line was seen waiting around for a traditional feast of pancakes on Cork's Paul Street.

"The food equivalent of a cheap petrol promotion," one commenter remarked.
