'Innocent bystander' shot on night out had planned to take son to Arsenal parade

A mother who was shot and killed on a night out had been planning to take her son to Arsenal's victory parade this weekend.

Shanice Brookes, 30, was an “innocent bystander” when she was shot in Sheffield city centre around 2.45am on Bank Holiday Monday, and later died in hospital.

Ms Brookes' friend and cousin appeared on Good Morning Britain to share a heartbreaking tribute, saying her death was the “stuff of nightmares".

Tyler-Jay Reid, Ms Brookes’ cousin, revealed that she was due to take her son to Sunday's Arsenal parade - but he will now tragically grow up without his mother.

Ms Reid said: "She's so selfless, she's not even a massive football fan, but she was putting it aside for her son, and she was going to take him to the Emirates.

“She was so excited about going and he was so excited to go down and something like that has now been ripped apart from him."

She said that Ms Brookes was on a night out for a birthday celebration when she was shot, and had “gone to let her hair down like any 30-year-old would.”

Ms Reid added: "She's been just an innocent person who's just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could happen to anyone.

“Anyone's daughter, anyone's friend, anyone's family, and I would not want anyone to go through what we're going to have right now."

Ms Brookes’ friend K-cee Cooper-Foster said had been with her just hours before.

Ms Cooper-Foster, whose children Ms Brookes was godmother to, said: “She should have been coming back home to us and now we’re never going to see her again.

“She had the purest heart and was the best mum to her son anyone could ask for.”

Ms Cooper-Foster and Ms Reid have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Ms Brookes' funeral and to support her 10-year-old son.

The fundraiser page states: "Shan deserves the most beautiful send off after being taken from us far too soon.

"Shanice had the biggest heart, the most infectious humour, and a beautiful soul that touched so many people. She lit up every room she walked into and was loved deeply by everyone lucky enough to know her."

A man and a woman have been charged in connection with Ms Brookes’ death and have been remanded in custody

Jemele Rhone, 30, has been charged with murder, possession of a firearm and possession of criminal property.

Deiryen Dyce, 32, has been charged with assisting an offender, possession of ammunition, possession of drugs with intent to supply, possession of drugs and possession of criminal property.

A 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder in Sheffield on Monday has been released and is no longer being treated as a suspect, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: "Shanice was an entirely innocent bystander who should've been able to enjoy a night out in our city without the fear that she wouldn't come home safely.

"Shanice's family, including her young son, now face the harrowing reality that they will never get to see her again.

"They are having to grieve the unimaginable loss of their beloved daughter, friend and mother in the most tragic of circumstances. Our thoughts remain with them."
