Two prison officers have been attacked by an inmate at a private jail.
They were assaulted in Douglas A wing of HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, at 5.15pm on Monday.
It’s understood both were punched in a flare-up with an unnamed prisoner.
Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene and the prison was locked down by guards until the situation was under control, at about 8pm.
A source said: “The prisoner was arguing with the guard then launched an attack.
“It caused an uproar as the other prisoners found it entertaining. Alarms were going off and they locked down the wing.”
Douglas hall is believed to house some of Scotland’s most dangerous prisoners and those serving life.
Last year, we told how whistleblowers claimed organised crime gangs are controlling the institution and staff were unable to stop illegal activities.
A spokesman for HMP Addiewell, which is run by Sodexo, said: “The police have been informed and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
