Shouts of "leg it lad" and "you little muppet" can be heard as the gang approach the man before he tries to flee. The victim is set upon by around seven young men, dressed in dark or grey clothing, who throw a number of punches at him.
The victim trips and falls to the ground as he tries to escape the attack. As he tries to protect himself, one of the men, wearing a woolly hat, takes a running kick at the victim's head which appears to render him immediately unconscious.
The gang eventually disperses as a member of the public tries to come to the victim's aid. The attack took place on a busy road and hundreds of fans on their way home from the match are visible in the background of the video.
A police investigation into the incident was launched with officers examining CCTV footage and taking first person accounts. The officer in charge of the case told the ECHO today that the crime is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
Merseyside Police previously said the victim, who suffered bruising and swelling to his eye, was taken to hospital by police to be checked over. A spokesperson for the force told the ECHO today that the victim suffered a fractured cheekbone in the brutal attack.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 9.40pm we received a report that the victim and his friends were walking along Oakfield Road when a group of males approached him and punched him in the face causing him to fall. He was then further assaulted by the group.
