Police have rescued an injured woman from a north Canberra residence after a man allegedly assaulted her and held her captive overnight.
The 43-year-old man is accused of carrying a knife and visiting a Higgins home on Friday evening, September 18, to threaten a woman known to him.
It is alleged the man, over several hours, assaulted the woman, damaged property inside the home and prevented her from leaving and contacting other people.
An ACT Policing spokeswoman said on Saturday, September 19, a concerned friend contacted police about 6.45pm after receiving text messages from the woman asking for help.
Police officers went to the Higgins address a short time later intending to do a welfare check.
The spokeswoman said officers used emergency powers to enter the home to check on the woman's safety after repeated failed attempts to contact those inside the property.
Police allegedly found the woman inside, injured, and arrested the 43-year-old man who was already subject to bail conditions at the time.
The man is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, September 21, charged with forcible confinement, aggravated common assault, damaging property, choking/suffocating/strangling another person, possessing an offensive weapon with intent, and threatening to kill a person.
