Injured Pat Cummins in line to bowl again

Test skipper Pat Cummins has returned to the field and is a chance to bowl against the West Indies again despite nursing a minor quad complaint.

Cummins felt tightness in his right quad on Friday and was a notable absentee when the West Indies began their second innings at Optus Stadium on Saturday requiring an unlikely 498 for victory.

The 29-year-old spent 36.3 overs off the field before finally returning.

Under MCC rules, Cummins will have to spend the same amount of time on the field before being able to bowl again.

It means he won't be sending down his thunderbolts until Sunday morning.

But with the day-night second Test in Adelaide to start on Thursday, Australia are unlikely to risk Cummins on the final day of the first Test if the rest of the bowling attack can rip through the West Indies' batting line-up.

Mitchell Starc had just bowled Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 45 to leave the visitors at 1-124 when Cummins made his way back onto the field.

"Ideally if Pat doesn't have to bowl in this Test match, that's great," Australia coach Andrew McDonald told Fox Cricket moments before Cummins came back on.

"It's a short turnaround (to the next Test), and that's in our decision-making as well.

"It's only a minor niggle. We think we can manage it. We've got a long summer ahead as well, but clearly this game is most important.

"The West Indies are playing really well, so we'll make a decision early tomorrow.

"His bowling will be valuable out there, so we're going to get him out there and then assess him at the end of the day."

Steve Smith captained Australia while Cummins was off the field.

It is the second time Smith has returned to the captaincy in the past year.

Last summer he was asked to take over from Cummins for the entire Adelaide Test when the fast bowler became a close contact of a COVID-19 case and was quarantined.

It was the first time Smith had taken charge of a team since the ball-tampering scandal of 2018.

Scott Boland is the back-up bowler in the Australian squad.
