Italian media give verdict on 'inflamed Anfield' and Liverpool win against Napoli

Liverpool returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Reds claimed the win thanks to late, second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez. Despite the victory, Liverpool still finish in second place in Group A, with their opponents claiming top spot.

Jurgen Klopp's side will find out their opponents for the last-16 when the draw is made next Monday. The final round of matchday six fixtures takes place on Wednesday evening.

Plenty of Italian news outlets were in attendance at Anfield to watch Liverpool end Napoli’s 13-game winning streak. And here is a round-up of what they had to say.

Jacopo Gerna, via Gazzetta dello Sport

“Mission accomplished, despite the defeat. With minimal effort and without injuries. Napoli loses 2-0 in Liverpool but closes the group first in the standings, with a remarkable loot of 15 points.

“Compared to forecasts, it was not a very exciting match, but what matters for Spalletti is that the primacy of the group was never at risk: Klopp's team would have needed to win by four goals but scored only in the final, with a two goal from the dead ball by Salah and an always dangerous Darwin Nunez.

“Kvara's stroke finds Ostigard's head: Alisson is beaten, but after an eternal Var control the Norwegian's offside position is punished.

“Only one episode can unlock a game that always stays in balance. Darwin Nunez thinks about it, who commits Meret with his head (perhaps the ball has already entered), who can do nothing on Salah's tap-in that removes all doubts.

“For Napoli a defeat that doesn't hurt, even if at the last second Nunez's doubling also comes. And now there will be many who want to avoid Spalletti's team in the second round.”

Pasquale TIna, via La Repubblica

“Napoli loses in the final minutes at Anfield against Liverpool, but the 2-0 knockout does not change the history of the Champions League group: Spalletti's team closes at 15 points just like the Reds and can still celebrate first place.

“For Napoli it is a historic result and it is worth the chance to face an opponent within reach of the Champions League round of 16 (draws on Monday in Nyon).”

Alessandro Barbano, via Corriere dello Sport

“The night in Liverpool shows that Napoli are human, that despite its character and class it retains a point of fragility with which it will be necessary to deal. But that doesn't make it any less admirable.

“Not only because he closes the Champions League first, but because he holds his own against the Reds for 90 minutes and dominates them for long stretches, imposing his game.”

Ciro Troise via Corriere della Sera

“What matters is the ranking, Napoli closes the Champions League group in first place , in the round of 16 they will avoid the best teams in Europe and will play the second leg at home.

“Decides the goal difference in the head-to-head matches by virtue of the resounding 4-1 in the first leg at Maradona. At Anfield the Azzurri, however, take their first defeat of the season, fall in the final conceding two goals from an inactive ball. Salah scores in the 85th minute and Darwin Nunez in the 99th minute, after another long control of the Var which broke, instead, in the 53rd minute the joy of Ostigard who had brought Napoli ahead. A convict shoulder removed the 0-1 and inflamed Anfield but Spalletti's boys had held up until the final part of the match with great courage and personality.

“At Anfield there is no joking, Spalletti knows it, he does not trust Klopp and Liverpool and applies the line of the few targeted line-up changes: they play Ostigard instead of Juan Jesus, Olivera for Mario Rui and space for Ndombele making Zielinski catch his breath.

“Klopp worked on the lesson of the first leg, something changes in his attitude: there is Firmino at the centre of the attack, called to slide over Lobotka in the non-possession phase.”
