Indonesia: Extramarital sex can land you in jail for up to 1 year!

In a latest development, Indonesia's Parliament has approved a new criminal code that bans anyone in the country from having extramarital sex. As per the reports, sex outside marriage will attract a jail term of up to a year as per the new laws. It will come into force at least three years from the date of passage, in 2025. The code still awaits the president's approval.

The changes comes in the wake of a rise in religious conservatism in the country. However, critics are of the view that the law will be a ‘disaster’ for human rights, and will put a potential dent in tourism and investment.

Reportedly, the new law will apply equally to locals and to foreigners living in Indonesia, and those visiting holiday destinations, such as Bali. And under the laws, if unmarried couples are caught having sex, they can be jailed for up to a year. It is anticipated that the law might also affect tourists.

Foreign governments are concerned that the new legislation, which still awaits presidential ratification, would likely impact foreigners visiting the country. In this context, the Australian Government added that it was still waiting for further clarity on the new law, and stressed that there is still time for this as it would not likely come into force for three years.

Referring to this, the United States also added that it was closely monitoring the situation. State Department Spokesman Ned Price told the media that there was growing concern regarding the impact of the legislation on US citizens living and visiting Indonesia.

Just like many countries, Indonesia's tourism industry was also dealt with a severe blow during the pandemic, which has now started showing signs of recovery. It now remains to be seen how the new legislation will further impact the tourism industry.
