The mother of an Indigenous teenager who died after allegedly being bashed with a metal pole as he walked home from school in Perth is set to work with police in the fight against crime.
Mechelle Turvey will work with the West Australian Police Force after her son Cassius Turvey, 15, was allegedly attacked on October 13, suffering fatal head injuries.
"Working with victims of crime, including leaders like Mechelle Turvey, is a key area of work for WA Police Force," Commissioner Col Blanch said on Thursday.
"Caring for victims and showing them respect is a fundamental consideration for police."
Ms Turvey's role is understood to include advising the force on how to better deal with victims of crime.
Her 15-year-old son died in hospital 10 days after he was allegedly violently beaten, triggering an outpouring of grief and anger across the nation.
Jack Steven James Brearley, 21, has been charged with his murder but is yet to enter a plea and is due to return to court in January.
Police have declined to speculate on whether the alleged attack was racially motivated.
