Indie Spanish film studio Filmax has acquired international sales rights to 'Alumbramiento' ('Birth'), the second feature film by Pau Teixidor, known for 'Purgatorio,' and produced by Aquí y Allí Films. The film tells the poignant story of Lucia, a teenager in 1982 Spain sent to a center for young pregnant girls. Lucia, played by Sofía Milán, finds herself in a reformatory for teen mothers-to-be, where she forms strong bonds with other girls but faces the heart-wrenching reality of her unborn child being taken away.
'Birth' is based on real events and was meticulously crafted through extensive research and interviews with over 50 individuals connected to the story. Teixidor, the director, emphasized the film's focus on memory and the shared feeling of being forgotten among the women he interviewed.
The project is a collaboration between Aquí y Allí Films, Minoría Absoluta, and Avanpost, with funding from various entities including Spain's Institute of Cinematography & Audiovisual Arts, public broadcaster RTVE, and the Madrid City Council. The film aims to shed light on a lesser-known aspect of Spanish history while honoring the resilience of its female characters.
'Birth' is described as a powerful narrative that, despite its challenging themes of maternal separation, ultimately celebrates life and the strength of women. The film's director, Pau Teixidor, developed the project during a residency at the Spanish Film Academy.
Buyers will have the opportunity to preview the film at the upcoming Spanish Screenings event in Málaga. The team behind 'Birth' hopes to bring attention to the untold stories of women affected by the events depicted in the film and spark a broader conversation about historical injustices.
