Meeting with reporters on Monday, Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen mentioned that linebacker Jaylon Carlies will “miss some time.”
Carlies exited Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins in the first half with an ankle injury.
Steichen di not mention a specific timeline for Carlies’ absence, but the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson would report that the initial timeline for Carlies is around four weeks. Erickson added that the injury is not a high ankle sprain.
Alongside of EJ Speed and Zaire Franklin, Carlies had been the Colts third linebacker this season when the Colts were lined up in their base 4-3 defense.
On Sunday, with Speed inactive, Carlies was the nickel linebacker next to Frankin, with Grant Stuard then seeing the field when Indianapolis was in their base alignment.
Carlies was off to an impactful start before exiting the game, recording five solo tackles, one of which was for a loss, and a red zone sack.
Carlies entered Sunday’s Week 6 matchup as one of Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded rookies this season. As a former college safety, Carlies brings an added coverage ability to the linebacker position for the Colts.
Presumably with Carlies out, if Speed is healthy, Stuard will be the SAM linebacker when the defense has three linebackers on the field. If Speed still has to miss time, then Segun Olubi will see some snaps.
