Indiana Rookie Caitlin Clark Breaks WNBA Assist Record

Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark made history in the WNBA on Wednesday night by breaking the record for assists in a single game. Clark dished out an impressive 19 assists during the Indiana Fever's matchup against the Dallas Wings, although her team ultimately fell short with a final score of 101-93.

Reflecting on her record-breaking performance, Clark humbly attributed her success to her focus on setting up her teammates for scoring opportunities. She acknowledged her tendency to sometimes be overly generous with her passing, emphasizing her commitment to facilitating her team's success.

The previous record for most assists in a WNBA game stood at 18, achieved by Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky on August 31, 2020. Vandersloot had also matched this record in a playoff game on September 28, 2021. Additionally, the league's previous rookie assist record was held by Ticha Penicheiro, who recorded 16 assists for the Sacramento Monarchs on July 29, 1998.

Clark's record-breaking assist came during a crucial moment in the game when she set up Kelsey Mitchell for a game-tying 3-pointer with just 2:22 left on the clock. Despite the Fever's efforts to stay competitive, the Dallas Wings managed to secure the victory with an 8-0 run in the closing minutes, including a turnover by Clark when her team was trailing by four points with 36 seconds remaining.
