Indian women's TT team bags bronze at BRICS Games

NEW DELHI: The Indian women's table tennis team, consisting of Poymantee Baisya, Moumita Dutta, and Yashini Sivasankar, secured the country's first medal at the current BRICS Games being held in Kazan, Russia. The trio earned a bronze medal after facing a 1-3 defeat against China in the semi-final match on Friday.

In the opening game, Yashini displayed a strong performance, winning 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-2. However, the Chinese team mounted a powerful comeback, claiming victory in the remaining three rubbers and advancing to the final round of the competition.

Newly-appointed Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the women's team.

"Heartiest congratulations to Women's #TableTennis team for winning the Bronze Medal at #BRICS Game. This is our first medal at the event. You have made the nation proud! I wish you continued success and glory in all your future endeavors," Mandaviya posted on his official X handle.

According to PTI, the Indian men's team, consisting of Anirban Ghosh, Jeet Chandra, and Snehit Suravajjula, concluded their campaign with a fifth-place finish. In their classification match, they secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Bahrain.
